Cambodia Kuy Update
February 2003

While doing survey work, Tom visited the house of a village headman. The headman was not there but his parents were there with a sick grandchild in a hammock. The child had a fever and they had given him medicine, but he lay wrapped in layers of cloth, believing that a hot feverish person needs to be kept covered and warm.

In another village Tom came across someone holding an obviously sick small child. He was told the child had malaria. When asked about three small burn marks on his back, he was told that they had burnt the child with a stick from the fire to cure him.

Ignorance about basic health care and sanitation is a major problem in rural Cambodia and so much more among the Kuy.
