On a recent survey trip to Preah Vihear province, Tom traveled to a remote area to survey some Kuy villages. He was accompanied by a Khmer church planter and a member of a local congregation who was their guide. As they visited villages of mostly illiterate Kuy people, Tom's friends desired to be a witness for Christ by giving out gospel tracts. Afterwards, Tom asked the church member why we were giving tracts to be people who can't read. He replied, "Even, I can't read them." Illiterate believers passing out gospel tracts to other illiterate people! There has to be a better way.

Another way to communicate gospel truths to unbelievers and to build the faith of believers who are illiterate or semi-literate is to use the method called "storying." Bible stories are told in a way that enables the listeners to quickly learn them and begin immediately to tell them to others. Cultures which are not literate tend to be story-telling cultures who are used to this form of remembering events, entertainment and instruction.
