KUY LINGUISTIC SURVEY
Who would have imagined that Kuy people living so close to each other would
speak differently?
Results from a quick linguistic survey done a year ago showed at least two,
maybe more dialects of Kuy language in Cambodia, none really matching the Kuy
dialects known in Thailand. It is as yet unclear whether the Kuy speakers of
these dialects can understand each other. Right now a second survey is taking
place to try to find out how much these two groups can understand each other and
to try to learn more about the distribution of various dialects. This is a great
opportunity for Tom to help gather information he would not have the expertise
to gather on his own and for him to glean more non-linguistic information about
the culture and location of the Kuy in the process.
Please pray for Linda, Noel, Tom, their translators and driver
- for safety on the roads and that they would be able to
reach the villages that they hope to
survey (praise God, the rains are holding off some at the moment)
- for clear communication between three languages
- for helpful, cooperative villagers who can give
accurate information
- for good health and grace for very
hot weather (90 - 110 F and humid)
- for wisdom in using the results of the survey to speed
the gospel message to the Kuy of
Cambodia.
*This is a monthly prayer update for the Kuy people of
Cambodia. We would like to
encourage as much prayer as possible so we are sending this to many people. If
you know of prayer groups or individuals who would like to pray for this group,
please feel free to forward this email to them. If you are not interested in
continuing to receive these updates, please reply to this email and let us
know. We will remove your name from
the list.
